I wasn't born yet when this photograph was taken but it does give me memories...ancestral memories, that is, of historical struggle, overcoming oppression, poise, strength, courage and most of all, dignity, compassion and the innocence of a child in the face of evil. This is one of the most beautiful photos ever taken imho. So much captured by Pulitzer prize-winning African-American photograhper Moneta Sleet, Jr. (I grew up with his work, as like many black families in the South, we have had a subscription to Ebony and Jet since their inception. To this day, you can find both, side-by-side on my grandmother's coffee table). And the unmatched Mahalia Jackson sang Dr. King's last request that day - her rendition of Thomas Dorsey's "Precious Lord."

" Based on a spoken soundwave pattern of the phrase "Don't let your life pass you by" from the song "I Will Remember You" by Sarah McLaughlin, I created a site-specific light sculpture for Steve Miller of Origin Ventures. Each element is a reflection of the patron: clean-cut, minimalist design; 65 pieces for his birth year; a favorite color of Lake Michigan with which the sculpture shares a horizon line visible through south-east windows on the 58th floor; gold-tipped quills hand-made of 200 year old pine (he is the grandson of Quill, Inc. founder); and the title phrase--for new beginnings.
