Where do you consider home? Is it the place you grew up; the place you're currently living? Why is it home?
Submitted by uncagedbird.
planes, trains and automobiles. home is inside my head.
Who is the very first friend you ever had? Are you still in touch?
michelle ross and lilac cox were my very first best friends. we all met in day care. michelle's mother and lilac's grandmother were both good friends of my grandmother who ran the day care we all attended (northeast daycare center in gainesville, florida). lilac's grandmother, ms. ella lee and my grandmother at about 4' 11'' each, were also (and still are) the shortest folks in the adult choir at the church i grew up in on northeast eighth avenue. michelle's mother also ran a daycare center over at the historic friendship baptist church but she attended the one that my grandmother ran. her older sister gail later took over northeast.
michelle, lilac and i were alike in so many ways. we always laughed together and i don't think we ever fought. we were tight like sisters and had many sleepovers. michelle's father was one of the first black police officers in gainesville and i was in awe of him. even when my family moved to a neighboring town when i was in fourth grade, because of our family ties, i always somehow kept in touch with michelle. and when i moved back to gainesville, she was still there with her pretty smile and one of the "smart" girls in her high school. unfortunately, michelle had some serious health issues and died a few years after we graduated from college.
lilac and i saw each other mostly at church functions and we sat together on sundays with a bunch of other kids sneaking bites at candy we bought with our church money from the convenience store across the street (which is still there after zillions of ownership and name changes). every weekday morning, my grandmother picked her up from her grandmother's house for the ride to day care. one morning, the day after my grandmother had purchased a brand new 1974 nova hatchback, a concrete mixing truck rammed into the back of the car and totalled it. i was sitting in the front and lilac was alone in the back. i remember looking back at her when the car was in a ditch and all the glass shattered and she was so still sitting like a pretty little angel in a pool of shards. that day she cheated death and was taken out of the car with not a scratch. i had no injuries either but at least i was in the front with a seat belt and luckily my grandmother only suffered whiplash. the story of lilac "the miracle child" circulated for years and every once in a while my grandmother and i will talk about how it was so amazing (or as my grandmother would say "so blessed"') that lilac escaped completely unharmed from the smashed up car.
lilac and i never attended the same schools after day care but church activities sealed our bond. during her teen years lilac moved to miami to be with her mother i think, i'm still not sure of the story and got involved with some unsavory crowds. and like michelle, she too is gone from this earth. she succumbed to AIDS in her twenties and i'm told her peers in her miami neighborhood made t-shirts honoring her and wore them to her funeral.
i didn't attend michelle's funeral either because i was probably living a long way from home at the time but i have programs from both services to remind me of the faces and family connections of my first friends. we were three scrawny, rusty-butt black girls in the early 1970s running around playgrounds and church lawns like the world was ours and not a care in the world.
Posh and Becks have moved to Los Angeles: [is this good?]
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz
Would you go on vacation by yourself, and if so where would you go?
Submitted by Sean & Stefan.
i'd go to new zealand alone.
solo vacations are great, i've done it a lot...you don't have to worry about other folks. of course, it is equally nice to share your travel experience with others as well but i think everyone should take a few trips by themselves in their lifetime.

What's the weirdest baby name you've ever heard (or considered)?
oh, this list could go on and on...
my grandmother is a foster grandparent at the neighborhood elementary and she has endless stories of the effed up names people give their kids....
- Shalexus....since I can't have a Lexus, I'll name my baby girl after the car.
- Latrina - now really...
- All they myriad ways people have spelled "Sade" in naming their little girls includes-- Charde, Sharday...
Famous ones:
- Anfernee - (i'm sorry mr. hardaway, but your parents gave you a messed up name)
- Beyoncé - in the words of chris rock - 12 steps back for black folks. i'm sorry ms. tina, i don't care if that was your french-creole maiden name, it sounds crappy for your daughter's first name. still sounds g-h-e-t-t-oooooooooo.
- Swintayla (Swin Cash, WNBA player) - i feel kind of bad for this 'cuz i think this was her grandma's name. but damn this ain't 1923.
- Nevaeh (girl), Jalen and Ja-Juan (boys) - (the triplets of the WNBA's helen darling, good lord!)
- BreAzia (daughter of WNBA player Olympia Scott). i love the name olympia for a girl. why couldn't she name her daughter after a goddess as well, not some made-up countrifed muckety -muck?
- Apple (daughter of that Paltrow chick) - yeah, white folks give out messed up names too, by the ton, especially in hollyweird. ever been to north georgia? there are so many little white girls with combinations of 'miracle' in their name. i think it is a byproduct of the the devastation meth has had on people's brains.
p.s. this is all mostly in jest. i do love the creativity black folks (and any other folks for that matter) have with language. twisting and turning the language to suit our needs any which way we want...bebop /hip-hop/you-don't-stop.
