in the exhibit "red aside: chinese contemporary art from the sigg
collection." i got this shot of the installation (it stopped me in my
tracks) right before the docent came to tell folks we couldn't take
photos. i knew that but i wanted a photo of this. i wrote down the name
of the artist somewhere, when i find it i'll add it here.

What will it sound like Tuesday night when Alachua County School Board members look through their budget for $4,500 to keep a couple of school nurses employed until the end of the school year? School district spokeswoman Jackie Johnson said the sound will be, “a very, very tiny warning bell” compared to what is coming next in health rooms.
Alachua County is facing the prospect of eliminating nurses from almost every school in the district. [more...]
i find this alarming. teachers and other school personnel don't need to be in the position of taking care of student health issues. school nurses are essential. when i was in 7th grade i came to school once with what i just thought was a sprained ankle but by late morning i was in so much pain i could barely walk. i somehow made it to the school nurse's office--it took me forever to get there as i had to keep resting because my leg hurt so much. the very kind school nurse realized that i had a broken bone and immediately called my mother to come pick me up from school and take me to the hospital. if my mother couldn't have done that, the nurse would've called for a paramedic. turns out i had a badly fractured ankle. i wore a full leg cast for eight weeks (probably for so long because i broke the cast twice trying to play basketball when i was told, in a very stern manner, that i shouldn't put pressure on the leg). i thank the school nurse at lake weir middle school in candler, florida (marion county) for recognizing right away that i needed medical attention. i hope the alachua county school board finds some alternate funding so the school nurses are able to keep their jobs.
