the daily photo is a slideshow because yesterday was la pedrera and then a night walk to torre agbar. i don't like torre agbar but it fascinates me. i see it everyday because there is a clear view of it from where i'm staying on carre casp. it looks like a giant suppository. i didn't arrive at la pedrera until after 5 p.m. just in time for the last entry at 6 p.m. i waited until then because i wanted to be there at dusk and to hopefully avoid large crowds. it was an overcast day and that helped keep people away.

growing up in florida, the presence of the cuba was somehow always in
the air. whether it be from the the radios blaring another arrival of
cubanos on the shores, the blaring voices of exiles castrating castro
on the airwaves or just the smells that are common to the most tropical
regions of florida, flora y fauna, food and kin--the island just 90
miles away from miami. i went to cuba in '99. and it was a surrealist
mindf*ck where on the one hand i could view cnn in the hotel nacional
each day while eating a nice breakfast or on the other, get mistaken
for a well-dressed prostitute when i dared stray from my other american
friends when we were in touristy areas with la policia demanding to see
my identification pronto. i lived in chicago at the time and when the
police realized i was american, they fired questions at me about
michael jordan y of course baseball, you know, los chicago cubs. so
fidel is going to step down. finally.
as they say, there are at least two sides to every story and when it comes to cuba, there are millions as if each were a unique triangular spot on a geodesic dome of contrasting yet complementary colors called cuba. here in barcelona, i see ads to go to cuban vacations spots, mostly varadero and the like, in the window of each agencia de viajes i pass. something that always fascinates me, even when i'm in canada. vacation packages to cuba. starting at EURO499. ha.
yesterday i needed a soy latte. bad. but it was the middle of a barcelona sunday afternoon when just about everything was closed and i was too far from my abode to try and take a crack at making my own in the kitchen. i didn't know where any open cafes were where i could get my fix but then, lo and behold, i saw a starbucks. if you know me, you know i ain't about trying to promote sbux or any corporate entity but hell, i needed a soy latte. and i remembered reading at pënz about the scryptkeepers recent close call with starbuckian terror and could only laugh. this is for you my friend:

this starbucks was NOT a hotspot so i couldn't use my boingo account. i had to sit outside to
find an open wi-fi connection as being inside cut down the number of connections i could access
and none of them were unsecured.

there are so many strong positive words one could use to describe raúlrsalinas
he passed away this week on wednesday morning
and the word spread like wildfire in austin and beyond.
he was a not only a drum major for justice/poet/elder/teacher/father/mentor to many
but a warm, gentle soul
i only met him twice
the first time was during the first week i moved to austin during a pre-opening celebration of his legacy
at the spanking brand new mexcian american cultural center in austin.
it was obvious that his health wasn't so great but he held up
throughout the duration of the ceremony/performances and greeted
everyone with love.
the next time i saw him was at the ROOTED reading that i participated in at the bookstore/community center he founded, resistencia bookstore/red salmon arts. it was so great to see him there and everyone was so happy that he attended.
in the words of his son rene:
"Even though he has left this realm and it's a great loss para nuestro pueblo, his spirit is strong and lives on in all of us."
